Use of and understanding data

Both undergraduate and postgraduate marking criteria emphasise the importance of using data effectively. According to the criteria for coursework used by some universities there are two main areas in which you will be assessed in which use of data is important: ‘use of sources and evidence’ and ‘criticality and analysis’. Data, alongside literature, are vital to the evidence base of most assignments. In addition, when using data you will be expected to demonstrate the ability to critically analyse the evidence you have used.

A Headstart study skills seminar will show students how to:

  • Skim reading and scanning literature

  • Use data to help the reader better understand

  • Interpret graphs, charts and tables

  • Present data in different and appropriate ways

  • Describe, summarise and reference data
